KABUL: British Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industry country director Dr Zia Ur Rehman Zia joined Afghanistan’s delegation led by the chairman of Afghanistan Senate Mr Muslimyar to China last week to attend Boao Forum, meet private sector leaders and discuss public-private partnership opportunities with Chinese government officials for the One Belt, One Road initiative in Afghanistan.
Dr Zia met with vice prime minister of China Mr Zhang Gaoli, executives of major corporations and highlighted the opportunities available in Afghanistan for investment.
He presented Afghanistan’s strategic location in the heart of Asia as a key for the success of One Belt, One Road initiative.
Dr Zia highlighted opportunities available in Afghanistan for investment in the energy, mining, telecommunication, infrastructure and manufacturing sectors.
He stressed increased bilateral trade and commerce between Afghanistan and China. And urged Chinese businesses to buy Afghan products directly from Afghanistan, and not through third countries where products are wrongly labelled under a different country with low quality.
Dr Zia spoke about the high quality carpets, saffron, dried fruits and gemstones that Chinese businesses can buy directly from Afghanistan through BACCI’s Buy From Afghanistan Initiative.
He also urged businesses to use innovative structures in implementing projects efficiently and mitigating risks in both countries through private-private partnerships (joint-ventures) and public-private partnerships (PPP).
BACCI’s attendance of Boao Forum and visit to China comes at a time when BACCI sees the growing importance of One Belt, One Road initiative, and the great opportunities it offers to Afghanistan and its private sector.
As a follow up to Boao Forum, BACCI is also co-hosting and participating in Silk Road Investment Forum in London next week on 6th and 7th April.
BACCI chairman Dr Hotak will be chairing two key panels in the event on Connecting the Regions of the Silk Road and Silk Road Region Energy & Mining Market Dynamics.
